Lucy Thompson papers, 1899-1919.

Holograph and typescript drafts of Thompson's book To the American Indian, accompanied by miscellaneous printed parts of her book, and approximately 200 photographs. The holograph drafts are separated into parts with separate titles and pagination. Almost every part is dated 1911-1913 and signed "Wrote by Milton J. Thompson and dedicated to my dear Daughter Bertha M. Thompson," the last words scratched out and "To my wife Lucy Thompson" substituted in 1915. Most of the holograph parts correspond to chapters in the book; there are six parts that seem not to have been incorporated into the final book. Both the holograph and typescript drafts carry Lucy Thompson's handwritten corrections. Accompanied by photographs of Lucy Thompson, her family and friends, Klamath Indians, and scenes in Humboldt County, California, some of which were used in the book. There are also seven deeds for land allotted to Klamath Indians in Humboldt County, California.
